10 tips to succeed as a woman in tech

Posted by Tilt Recruitment on September 2, 2021

The tech industry needs women now more than ever. The opportunities are unlimited, but the road to success is still littered with pitfalls. Here’s how to avoid them and enjoy a successful career in your chosen field.

1 – Never stop learning

Everyone has strengths and weaknesses, and while it’s important to build on your strengths, you also need to identify your knowledge gaps and actively work to fill them. Find out about training and courses you can take in your spare time to beef up your CV and expand your skillset.

2 – Network

Building relationships and establishing a network of contacts is vital for your career. Keep your LinkedIn page up to date, get people’s business cards or contact details when you meet them, and reach out to them afterwards.

3 – Show off

As a woman, you may have been raised to be modest. It’s time to forget that and get comfortable with a little bragging. Your male colleagues were raised to be loud and proud about their accomplishments, so if you’re too reticent, you risk getting passed over.

4 – Find a mentor

See if you can find someone to show you the ropes, ideally a more senior woman. Joining a mentorship scheme either within your company or outside it will show you’re keen – and if you notice a shortage of female role models, consider becoming the mentor you want to see in the world.

5 – Ask for feedback and learn to see criticism as a positive

Criticism can hurt, but try to see it as an opportunity to improve. Men are expected to be able to handle straight-talking feedback; show that you can too, or you’ll miss out on important information. Actively seek out constructive feedback and learn from it to improve your weaknesses and capitalise on your strengths.

6 – Watch your work/life balance

Working hours in tech can be both long and intense, so it’s vital to make time for rest and play, particularly if you have domestic responsibilities. Talk to your line manager about your needs before they become a crisis; there are no prizes for burning out.

7 – Go to industry events

Learn more about your field and build up your network by attending industry events both IRL and online. Again, this is a great way to demonstrate commitment and impress your employer.

8 – Communicate

Make sure you’re talking to your colleagues and having weekly or biweekly 1:1s with your manager. Use this time to raise concerns, ask questions, and find opportunities to take on new responsibilities. Speak up in team meetings and make helpful suggestions where you can.

9 – Set personal goals

Be ambitious. Have a 5-year plan and be ready to talk about it at interview. Set yourself some SMART targets to work towards. It’ll help with your motivation and mark you out as having high potential.

10 – Immerse yourself in your industry

Make sure you’re up to date on industry news by following relevant accounts on LinkedIn, Instagram and Twitter. You can find groups on LinkedIn for women in various sectors of the tech industry – it’s worth joining a few.

By following these tips, you’ll be setting yourself up for success as a woman in tech, and blazing a trail for generations of girls to come.
