Developers: These skills will make you irresistible to employers

Demand for multi-skilled workers is booming. 34% of tech leaders are planning to hire in 2022, but 56% expect it to be harder to find qualified candidates post-COVID.

The survey also found that front-end developers, who work on digital storefronts, are in particularly high demand thanks to the explosion of online shopping. This in turn is creating huge volumes of new data, leading to more roles for data scientists, analysts and engineers. Remote working has also caused a surge in demand for skilled remote IT support.

All these changes mean new skillsets are needed – and not just technical skills. 34% of CIOs say most candidates are short on soft skills like problem-solving, adaptability, communication and negotiation. It’s “all-rounders” who are most in demand now.

With the pandemic pressuring businesses to roll out massive digital transformations quickly and cut costs at the same time, cybercriminals have found plenty of weak spots to prey on. CIOs cite IT security as their biggest concern for 2022, says the survey. But 15% say permanent candidates with IT security skills are the hardest to find.

As for CIOs’ second-highest priority in 2022, it’s a three-way split between ‘innovation and investing in new technologies’, ‘cloud projects and initiatives’ and ‘working 5G capabilities into IT strategy’ – followed by ‘automation to boost productivity or reduce costs’, ‘transformation projects and initiatives’, DevOps, and ‘data warehousing reviews’.

The tech talent drought will affect all of these. A September survey by Gartner found that lack of capability is organisations’ biggest barrier to adopting emerging technologies. And as the pace of change becomes ever faster, candidates who can evolve and adapt their skills over time will be in increasing demand.
