The biggest change to recruitment since is not the rise of the Zoom interview – it’s what the Zoom interview represents.

Virtual interviews for virtual roles mean virtually the entire world is your talent pool. Many businesses have not only embraced hiring without meeting in person, but also embraced hiring internationally.

Even with meeting in person now being an option again, most companies are still beginning, if not completing, the interview process online.

But this isn’t the only change to recruitment in the new normal. There are three major points every recruiter or hiring manager needs to be aware of.

1. Build relationships

Building rapport has always been important in recruitment, but when you can’t meet candidates in person, you need to find new ways to create a close relationship and gain a clear understanding of their needs and talents.

While video calls are a great way to handle this, not all candidates will be as familiar with them as you are. Send out SMS surveys to make sure your pool of candidates are happy with communicating this way, get feedback on how you can improve, and discuss their job search status in detail.

2. Make sure they’re prepared

Again, telling candidates to “be prepared” is an old saw that takes on a new meaning when they’re preparing for a Zoom interview. Like it or not, you are now their tech support. You’ll need to make sure they’ve installed and understood the software and have a strong internet connection.

Not everyone is up to speed with this yet, so repeat information in a few different ways to make sure they get it. Texting is often considered the best way to make sure your messages are seen, as the average adult checks their phone every 12 minutes.

3. Consider candidates’ mental health and wellbeing

40% of UK workers report increased money worries because of the pandemic, according to YourMoney.com. To be able to do their best work, people need to be secure in their roles and have a way to express and relieve their anxieties. Recruiters now need to consider this for every candidate. Don’t pry, but do try to understand the levels of importance and anxiety around certain elements of work, to make sure you’re matching the right candidate with the right organisation and role.
