If you’re wondering how to prepare for a career change to tech in 2021, start by following these 5 tips.

1. Be Bold with Your Goal

Fortune favours the bold. Set yourself ambitious career goals this year. With everything changing as we adjust to the new normal, anything is possible.

2. Set Specific Goals

Don’t just be bold, be specific. You can’t achieve what you can’t track. Think of at least three things you want to achieve this year that relate to your career transition and put numbers on them. For example, how many jobs do you want to apply for? How many industry events do you want to attend?

Put the goals somewhere you’ll see them every day, and each time you see them, ask yourself what you’re doing to achieve them.

3. Invest in Your Education

If you’re transitioning from another industry, look into online courses to help you brush up the skills you’ll need to succeed in tech. Websites to check (some of which offer free courses) include:


Before signing up for paid courses, remember that you’ll need to invest time as well as money, and make sure you’ve planned out enough free time to realistically manage the course load.

4. Avoid analysis paralysis
If you’re not sure which field you want to specialise in, you’re not alone. Tech is a broad field, and it can be hard to work out what’s the best fit for you. Rather than getting stuck in indecision, pick any field that interests you and start there; you can always branch out later.

5. Network

No matter what kind of career change you’re considering, networking is key. Find ways to connect with others in your field of choice. LinkedIn is a good place to start: search for people with roles like the ones you’re looking for and reach out to them.

Let your family and friends know about your plans too. You never know who might hook you up with a useful contact.

When networking, don’t ask your contacts for a job, just ask for their insights on the field. The more people you have in your network, the more of a picture you can build up of what you want and how you can achieve it.
