September Surge: How it can help you find a new job

Posted by Tilt Recruitment on September 8, 2023

September is the best month of the year to search for new job roles. The ‘September Surge’ is becoming vastly well known among job hunters due to the power of social media.

The September Surge describes the rise in job searching and job listings posted between the first Monday in September and Halloween at the end of October. Whilst this ideologically originated in the US, it has travelled over to the UK as well.

In general, July and August are much slower in terms of the number of people applying to job listings, and fewer job listings are posted than the average month as well. Then comes September when recruiters begin to post more listings and more people begin to seek new work.

Generally, interest from prospective employees tends to be higher in September than any other month of the year.

If you are currently on the search for new work during this September Surge, then you first need to update your CV with your most up-to-date work experience and knowledge.

On top of this, you should put some time and care into your LinkedIn profile where recruiters are likely to reach out to you during the surge. Make sure you have selected the ‘Open to work’ feature on your profile to attract these recruiters. In addition, you need to highlight your top skills on your profile and make it crystal clear the type of work you are searching for to attract the right opportunities.

Bear in mind that just because there are jobs available during the September Surge, doesn’t mean you need to apply for all of them if you are in search of a new role. You should still be selective about which jobs you apply for because job hunting is more about quality than quantity if you want to attract the right role for you. You should always tailor your application to the job you are applying for. This method implies passion for the individual company you are applying for and suggests to the hiring manager that you are the right candidate for the role.

Remember that the September Surge is also the perfect time period to brush up on your interview skills. Whilst there are more job roles available for job hunters, there is also an increase in job hunters searching for roles. With this in mind, you need to understand how you can sell yourself in an interview. To do this, use the September Surge to practice common interview questions to challenge yourself to become a better interviewee.

Final Thoughts: How can the September Surge help you find your desired role?

The September Surge is a busy time for recruiters, but this should encourage you to communicate with them as much as you can throughout the recruitment process.  To make yourself stand out for other candidates you should send a follow-up email after every interview stage. This should be used as an opportunity to show your eagerness to work for the company.
