How Do Recruitment Trends Change From Season to Season?

The world of recruitment is always evolving, and some of these changes can be seen on an annual basis. As one season moves to another, the recruitment process has peaks and pits. Below, we have taken a look at some of the key recruitment periods in the tech industry, and how this changes as we go through the seasons.



When it comes to recruitment in winter, there are two main trends to think about. During December and as the year is winding down, recruitment tends to slow down and fewer companies are hiring. With a focus on the year coming to an end and a lot of people taking annual leave, few companies prioritise hiring during this period. Though not all hiring comes to a complete stop, finding roles can become more difficult, and you might need to dedicate more time and energy into finding opportunities that tick every box. Once it’s January, this changes completely, and a lot of companies kickstart their recruitment efforts the moment the new year has started. This is largely due to a new year meaning a new budget, and recruiters want to make use of these resources.



Spring is when a lot of people graduate, and recruiters tend to focus their attention on college and university leavers. A lot of companies will begin the recruitment process in April, to ensure that they have graduates in place by June. Spring is also the season when a lot of companies boost their hiring efforts for the upcoming year, and so recruitment in most sectors tends to be active, busy and full of opportunities during this time. A lot of companies dedicate themselves to filling open positions in spring, and the demand for technology professionals is at its highest.



When it comes to recruitment in technology, summer tends to be a quiet season. Many people are taking annual leave and heading off on holiday, and hiring new staff is pushed to the back of a lot of people’s minds. If you do apply for a job during the summer, it’s likely to be a slower moving process, and HR generally aren’t as quick to go though applications and organise interviews, whilst also managing staff holidays. This is even more true for higher level roles, which require interviews with a lot of senior people in the company. That’s not to say that job roles aren’t up for grabs in the summer, it’s just that the recruitment process tends to be slower, and companies are in less of a rush to fill roles.



Autumn is a time when a lot of companies ramp up their recruitment efforts, especially as many teams are back to full capacity after the summer. Companies are keen to fill open positions before Christmas, and job seekers are keen to secure a role before the recruitment lull of the winter rolls around. Plus, with the end of the year on the horizon, a lot of companies are keen to utilise any budget that they have left. Autumn is a great time to look for a job and the entire process tends to be quick, as hiring managers have a sense of urgency and a time limit to adhere to.


As you can see, recruitment trends do change from season to season, but securing a job is possible at any time of the year. Though the process might be slower at some times and more streamlined at others, career opportunities are always out there.
