Will flexible working stick?

Flexible working has been the buzzword of 2021, but is it really here to stay in 2022 and beyond?

Many of us throughout the UK have been working from home during Covid, and our working culture has gone through a seismic shift. Debate has raged among employees and employers alike on the advantages and disadvantages of this new way of working.

The first lockdown forced us to adjust quickly to a dramatic change in lifestyle, and many struggled to manage working from home and homeschooling their children. But there were also upsides to having more time at home and more freedom in how we spent it, rather than commuting or staying late at the office.

As we move into 2022, home working is becoming more familiar, and we’re getting the hang of managing the work-life balance. So it may be unsurprising that 44% of workers – over 13 million people – are planning to ask for permanent flexible working arrangements, according to a survey by Direct Line. Respondents said saving time and money, as well as prioritising family and health, were their main reasons for the move.

Meanwhile, 43% of HR directors are planning to offer full-time home working options to some employees, and 20% will offer home working three or four days a week. Besides the obvious savings on the cost of office space, it’s rapidly becoming clear that refusing to offer flexible working in the current candidate short market is likely to leave companies short of candidates.

Those employees who don’t want to become fully home-based may still appreciate the option of a hybrid working style with some days in the workplace and some at home, enabling them to take better care of their families and their own physical and mental needs. While not everyone wants to work from home full time, and it would be a shame for workplace camaraderie to become entirely a thing of the past, it does look as if some form of flexible working is here to stay.
